Our History

DeVry University's rich history began when Dr. Herman DeVry envisioned an innovative and forward-thinking solution to meet the educational demands of the day. Today, we stand proud of our 80+ years of dedication to educational excellence that has been integral to improving the lives of our students.

Dr. Herman DeVry was a renowned engineer and inventor. In 1912, he developed the first portable motion picture projector, which soon became instrumental in the production of educational and training films. He received more than 30 patents in the cinema field and introduced "visual education," as he believed students would learn more quickly and retain information better through visual techniques.

Dr. DeVry and long-time friend Lee DeForest, inventor of the Audion vacuum tube, founded the DeForest Training School, originally formed to offer training in the repair of motion picture and radio equipment. The pioneering curriculum was eventually expanded to include training in the repair of televisions and other electronics. It allowed working adults to quickly learn the latest advancements in electronics and provided education deeply grounded in industry demand and employer needs.

Now, 80 years later, the world has changed. Our economy has shifted up and down. Yet, the ultimate focus and dedication of DeVry University has stayed the course: to provide career-focused education. Students come to DeVry University seeking an education to meet their life and career goals, and we continue to deliver.
